Branch #51 in Edson has followed the tradition set out by the founders, and has contributed enormously to our community. An estimated $63,000 was raised and donated amongst various programs and charities in 2008, and include the Air Cadets, Midget Hockey, Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation, Cancer research, among others. Another little known program is the electric scooters and wheelchairs the Legion makes available to borrow, but certain criteria must be met before approval is granted; contact the office for more information. The Legion also sponsors a bursary for public education, and the applicant doesn’t need to be a member to apply. This is for a student directly out of high school, and goes towards the first year of secondary education. Last year the Branch and the Ladies Auxiliary awarded eight $500 and one $1,000 bursaries, and interested students are asked to contact their high school offices for more information.
